The advantage of using Components is that when you Edit one Instance and save it the changes are reflected across all Instances. Making the contents of a Component on Layer0 means that you can do things like - the 'Door' Component Instances on the 'first-floor' Layer can be switched on while other Instances of the same 'Door' on the 'second-floor' can be switched off. You can also bring in external SKPs as new Components in the model, or save the model's Components as new external SKPs. You can easily assign specific Layers to selected Groups/Instances using the Layer-toolbar or the Entity-Info dialog. The SKP's Components appear in the Component-Browser, and therefore additional Instances can be added to the SKP as needed later. an artwork that only glues onto a vertical wall: 'cutting' which lets a 'glued' object cut a holes in the face it is placed onto - useful for windows/doors/rooflights/etc. your site's topographic mesh: if you have something that you are likely to use on several occasions in the SKP - like a Door, Window, Column etc then make it a 'Component' - which is similar to a 'Group', but it can have multiple Instances.Ĭomponents also do not "interact" with other Objects - except for those with special types of Component behavior set: 'gluing' which glues instances to preset 'planes' - e.g. *A 'Group' is a collection of Objects that you will use once - e.g. Groups do not "interact" with external Objects/Geometry - so unexpected geometry changes are avoided. Then 'Group'* related Geometry, and give that Group a sensible Name AND a specific Layer that you can then turn on/off to control its visibility - for anything on Layer0 inside the Group will vanish too when the Group's Layer is 'off'. Īlways have your 'active-layer' set to be 'Layer0' to avoid a mess up. Īlways drawn Geometry on the 'default-layer'. Sketchup Geometry that is on different Layers will "interact" even if some of it is on Layers that are not visible - causing unexpected results and issues. In Sketchup Layers simply control the "visibility" of objects. Sketchup's Geometry "sticks together" and "interacts", irrespective of the Layer it has assigned to it. Overall, this seems like a very workflow specific tool to me – for some people, it’s going to be absolutely amazing, while for others, it’s not the best fit for their workflows and there may not be a need for it.In CAD the Layers 'separate' Objects, but in Sketchup Layers do NOT separate them, irrespective of the Layers' visibility. You can also assign these tools to keyboard shortcuts for quick access by visiting Window, Preferences, then scrolling down under Extensions/Eneroth Swift Layer Visibility Control. This basically remembers the objects that you turned off last, allowing you to make quick changes without having to go back and re-select all the different layers to turn off. You can turn all the layers back on using “Show active layers,” then select an object that you’d like to keep on and run this option. The third option – “Re-Hide Last Shown Except for Selected Layers,” is almost like an advanced Undo function – let’s say you hid a bunch of layers, including a layer or two that you accidentally selected. If you want to turn your layers back on, the second button – “Show Active Layers,” will turn on all layers within your model. This will hide all the layers of any objects that you have selected. The way it works is simple – When working in your model and you want to hide a layer, simply select an object on that layer, then click the button for “Hide Selected Layers.” This works both with individual and multiple selections. This can be very helpful, especially if your layers list is 30 items long. This is a tool from Christina Eneroth designed to help you quickly hide and unhide layers without having to search for them in your layers list.
